Claims on White Russia…

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

“Claims on White Russia…” This is a title of a letter sent to The New York Times and published by the paper on July 4, 1920. By reading it, the very first questions should be: who pretends on it? to whom it belongs? Moreover, these questions bundled together with the title present [...]

Captive Nations Parade

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

Living in New York for short time I have already witnessed so many parades that probably, I could have written a reference titled “Annual parades held in NY”. For example, Puerto Rican, Irish, Turkish, and Chinese…All these parades have their unique history, backgrounds and purposes. Generally speaking, they are all aimed to show their cultural [...]

Remarkable discovery in White Russia in 1853.

Monday, April 10th, 2006

In a previous post, we attempted to show how many various interpretations exist regarding national stock of Belarusians. Anuszka mentioned in her comment:
“So, who was Mickiewicz?? Polish, Lithuanian, or Belarussian?”. Because he was born in Belarus, wrote poems in Polish, and his most famous poem begins with: “Lithuania, my homeland!”.
And indeed, so much confusion [...]

Polish, Russian, Lithuanian? Or maybe White Ruthenian?

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

Researching Belarusian history I was amazed at how many contradictory issues surround this country’s past. And while we can strongly assert that each single nation went through historical, political, cultural transformations Belarus stands out among them.
Among most burning was (still is) an issue whether Belarusian were more of a Polish, Russian or Baltic stock. It [...]

“White Russia Secedes”. A bit of history laced with newspaper news

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

In the end of the WWI, patriotically inspired Belarusian parties convened the All-Belarusian Congress in Meinsk. There were 1, 915 delegates from local governments, social, political and military organizations. According to some historians, there were almost all possible fractions and parties of that time: Mensheviks, Bolsheviks, and Social-Christians and so on and forth. An atmosphere [...]

The Russian census of 1926. Interesting observations

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

It always fascinated me to browse through archives of all kinds. First of all, there is a feeling that you hold a piece of history in your hands. Second of all, there is a chance to stumble upon something interesting and forgotten by public. Exactly same thing happened to me when I was searching “Foreign [...]

Belarusians protest against lies and propaganda

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Once in a while we stumble upon words and expressions that just don’t make any sense or simply incompatible with reality. For example, “communism with humane face”, “Dictatorship and freedom” and now we can one more entrée to the dictionary: fairness and objectivism as seen on Belarusian Television.
Simple and plain, the words objectivism and fairness [...]

Political developments in and around Belarus

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Another blow was delivered to Lukashenka from Canada. This country stopped significant portion of its diplomatic relationships with Belarus. This move is explained as a protest against actions taken by Belarusian authorities during the presidential elections that took place last week. Earlier, Canada condemned brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrations by Belarusian authorities.
For some reason, [...]

About hundred people lighten up candles today on the Nemiga in Minsk showing their solidarity with people who were beaten up and imprisoned by Belarusian authorities yesturday. They were there for about an hour and attracted attention of thousands people who were walking by. It is truly touching moment showing that people care about freedom [...]

He is half-way there.

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

As one of my friend who was there, told me - day consisted of 2 parts. First one - celebration - where thousands of people gathered together to celebrate the Day of Liberty/Will(will and liberty in belarussin language are represented by one word). This was very powerful and inspiring action. It was a rejoicing. It [...]
