He even maybe carrying out some holy mission in his mind... just like our president with his war in Iraq... it's all very subjective.. Perhaps for Russian people Putin is a hero or something... Evil or not, he often says a little bit too much, so people just flip all over. For instance, would you like if your neighbour from upstairs would start telling everyone that YOUR car is not yours, and is actually his, just cause his apt. is like 20 times bigger, got xhdtv cable, marble floors, 3 swimming pools and maintained by quite poor inhabitants (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/mar/15/russia.lukeharding)? Yeah, he maybe just bullshitting, but ya know he is sort of a big shot, so people kinda listen to what he says... some even believe... geez, and some even take it seriously... To the matter of 1990ies... dire time it was for all exUSSR countries(well, except for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). Some pulled through and some failed to do so and are still drowning in the swamp...
